Check out Dustin Waters, a BJJ Globetrotters purple belt from Savannah, Georgia, go at it against a black belt at the Sorinex Summer Strong 6 Games!
Here’s what he wrote about the experience:
I competed in an invite tournament over the weekend at the Sorinex Summer Strong 6 Games hosted by Athlete’s Arena in Columbia, SC. It started out as a 16-man tournament, $1000 cash prize but with many last minute drop outs due to injury, only 6 competitors total and $500 in cash.
3 black belts: Guybson Sa – SAS Team, Nicholas Moraes – SAS Team, and Diogo Silva de Souza – Gracie Barra. 3 purple belts: Dustin waters (me) – Marcio Cruz/Serg BJJ/Globe Trotters, Nick Fort – Athlete’s Arena, and Chad Bingham – Alliance.
The format was a round robin, with points given based on how the match turned out. 10 minute rounds, no points. If no winner was decided by submission in the 10 minutes, it goes to sudden death. First to score wins. IBJJF Brown/Black belt rules.
If you won by submission, regardless of in the 10 minutes or in sudden death you score 3 points. If you win by points in the sudden death, you score 1 point. If you lose, 0 points.
My first match was against Guybson Sa, he won very quickly by toe hold after a failed waiter sweep attempt from half guard. Second match was posted above, so I will let you watch that for your self.
My third match was against a friend and purple belt, Nick Fort. I had difficulties securing the submission through out the 10 minutes, but won in the sudden death with a sweep. Then my fourth and final match was against black belt Diogo Silva, after what I remember as a good match he won by toe hold which contributed my foot & knee not working very well.
The other purple belt, Chad, only wanted to compete against the black belts and forfeited his matches to the other purple belt and I. So with the points from his forfeit, I finished 3rd in the round robin.
1st. Guybson Sa – 15 points
2nd. Diogo Silva de Souza – 12 points
3rd. Dustin Waters – 7 points
