LOCATION

Just an hour north of Helsinki Airport, tucked away on a lakeshore in the middle of a serenely peaceful forest, is the Pajulahti Sports Institute. It’s home to Finland’s official Olympic Training Center, but the setting is so much more than that. Think firepits, a lakeside sauna, kayaking, and plenty of cosy spots to just hang out by the water.

Whether you’re relaxing on your balcony, paddling out on the lake, or simply soaking up the midnight sun that barely dips below the horizon in summer, it’s the ideal mix of world-class sports facilities and pure Finnish nature.

FACILITIES

The Pajulahti Sports Institute is Finland’s premiere training center for Olympic athletes. It’s been around since 1929 and has grown into one of the country’s most important sports hubs, hosting countless athletes from dozens of disciplines. A brand new combat sports center opened in summer 2025, featuring 900 m² of mats (including a 450 m² springed-floor Judo area), boxing rings, and showers/changing rooms. We also have access to an additional hall right next door.

In addition, camp participants will have free access to the center’s well-equipped weightlifting area.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is fully included in your camp ticket. You’ll be staying in modern apartments spread around the premises, in spacious rooms with their own private bathroom/shower and fridge. All rooms will be shared by two people, though if you prefer to fit three people to a room, we can do that as well.

For those who’d like a little extra comfort, upgrades are available:

Premium rooms with more space. These rooms also have a balcony/patio, microwave, tea kettle, and coffee maker.

Laundry is also included in the price of your ticket. Your clothes will be picked up daily and returned the following day, with everything hung to dry in the training hall next to where we practice.

FOOD

This is an all-inclusive camp, so you can just relax and enjoy! Buffet meals are served three times a day, with plenty of tasty options (see sample menu below). The main restaurant has space for 350 people, both indoors and outdoors, with an amazing view out over the lake.

The first meal is dinner on arrival day (Wednesday), and the last meal is lunch on departure day (Sunday). All drinks are included.

CAFÉ AND BAR

There’s also an on-site café and bar open from morning till late evening. They serve beer, which can only be consumed there in the café or on the lake terrace due to Finnish alcohol laws, but seriously, look at this view!

LAKE

Finland is called “The Land of a Thousand Lakes”, although in reality that’s a complete understatement — there are actually more than 180,000 of them! Our venue for this camp is located right beside a particularly beautiful example, the 4km² lake of Iso-Kukkanen (“Big Flower”).

The sports center is built right on the water’s edge, so it’s super easy to take a dip after Open Mat or a sauna session. There’s a swimming area if you just want a refreshing splash, or you can grab a kayak or paddle board and drift out to soak up the scenery.

It’s the perfect way to experience the Finnish landscape the way locals do — peaceful, close to nature, and maybe with a little bit of adventure on the side.

MIDSUMMER EVE CELEBRATION

Midsummer (or “Juhannus” in Finnish) is one of the biggest celebrations of the year — it’s like the ultimate summer holiday here. Under the warm glow of the midnight sun, Finns head out to the countryside or lakeside cottages to light bonfires, enjoy good food and drinks, and soak up the magical vibes of the endless evening. It’s all about celebrating nature, light, and being together with friends and family. For visitors, joining a Midsummer party is an unforgettable way to experience Finnish culture. Think midnight swims, laughter around the fire, and that dreamy atmosphere you’ll never quite find anywhere else.

And, in a remarkable coincidence, Midsummer just happens to coincide with the last day of camp, so we’re going to celebrate it in proper fashion! We’re throwing a big BBQ on the lake terrace, complete with drinks and a live DJ. All food included in the camp ticket, of course!

SWIMMING POOL

In case the lake feels a bit too crisp for your post-training swim, there’s also a large swimming pool on the premises. Entry costs around €5 per person.

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU TRAINING

On the brand new combat sports center, 900 m2 matspace, where we’ll host more training than you can handle – both gi and no-gi. Classes and open mat sessions will be running from morning to evening every day, taught by a variety of experienced, friendly, and high-level black belts from around the world who have a genuine interest in sharing their knowledge as well as in participating in the social aspects of the camp.

BJJ Globetrotters camps are known for being full of friendly people from all over the world, who enjoy good training in a fun, relaxed and open-minded environment, with a heavy emphasis on everyone being equal, both on and off the mats.

MORNING YOGA

Regardless of the colour of the belt around your waist, six days of 8+ hours on the mats is tough on the body! In order to keep us limber and loose right until the end, we’re bringing in a dedicated instructor to run morning yoga sessions every day of the camp.

SAUNA

In Finland, the sauna isn’t just a place to recover after training — it’s a way of life, at the very heart of the national culture. It’s where friends catch up, families bond, and beers are opened! For Finns, stepping into the sauna is about slowing down, relaxing, and enjoying a little slice of everyday magic. There are more saunas than cars here, and most people will tell you they feel incomplete without one. So if you really want to experience Finland like a local, you’ve got to try sweating it out in the sauna! (Clothes strictly forbidden…)

At this camp, we have two lakeside saunas with a beautiful view out over the water. They’ll be open every day during certain hours, and are free to use for all camp participants. You can even grab drinks from the on-site bar and bring them in with you. And, of course, what sauna experience would be complete without jumping straight into the crisp, fresh lake afterwards…?

A few of the rooms even have private saunas and you can book those for a small extra cost.

WORKSHOPS

Off the mats, we’ll be holding a series of workshops taught by a selection of instructors and highly knowledgeable camp attendees. These will all take place in the conference rooms around Pajulahti Sports Center. Generally they focus on Jiu Jitsu and sport-related topics, but we’ve also had presentations on things like improving your photography, making stuff happen, standup comedy and historic grappling arts – basically anything cool that we think might be interesting! You’ll just have to wait for the schedule and see what we’ve got lined up.

BUS TRANSFER FROM AIRPORT/CITY

In order to make getting there as easy as possible, we’ve organised optional private bus transfers that will run from Helsinki airport and Helsinki city center (pickup point: Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art) to the camp venue. The exact pickup times will be determined closer to the camp, but it’ll be roughly around noon, and will get you to the venue before 15:00 with plenty of time to check in. On Sunday morning, the bus will drop you back to Helsinki after the camp is finished.

Price is €35 for the round trip per person.

HELSINKI

The camp starts on Wednesday, but how about arriving a few days early (or staying a few days afterwards) and checking out Helsinki as well? It’s only an hour’s drive from the camp venue, and is a vibrant mix of cool Nordic design, buzzing cafés, and seaside views, all packed into a city that’s super easy to wander around on foot. Perfect way to ease into the Finnish vibe before heading deeper into the land of lakes and saunas. It also has one of the strongest BJJ scenes in Europe, and is full of Globetrotters camp veterans to meet!

You can even do a day trip by ferry down to Tallinn (Estonia) if you’d like to add another new country to your list.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR MIDSUMMER CAMP

Where is the camp?
The address of the camp is Pajulahdentie 167, 15560 Nastola, Finland.

How do I get there?
From Helsinki airport, it is approximately a one-hour drive. You could rent a car or book our bus transfer, which will have pick up points in the city center as well as the airport.

What day do I need to arrive / leave?
Check in opens Wednesday early afternoon and we’ll have our welcome meeting and first training in the late afternoon. The last activities are Saturday evening, so you can leave Sunday morning.

Is there a supermarket near the camp?
There is a small supermarket five minutes drive down the road.

Where can I wash my training clothes?
There will be a laundry service at the camp but Please note that this covers training gear only (i.e. gis, rashguards, shorts, spats, and underwear).

What kind of food are you serving?
Different food every day, but basic stuff like meat, rice, vegetables, salad, bread, etc.

Is there an option for vegetarian food?
Yes, please let us know on [email protected].

Is there a minimum age for participation?
You have to be at least 18 years old in order to attend the camp. The only exception is our family friendly camp in Austria, where kids can participate together with at least one adult. Our minimum age required to participate in the camp without an adult is 18 years and unfortunately we can not make any exceptions. If we allowed one, we would have to allow all and then we could end up having hundreds of teenagers at the camps every year.

I'm not sure if I'm free on those dates yet and/or can't afford to buy a ticket right now. Can I reserve a spot at the camp and pay later once I've made my decision/ saved enough money?
Sorry, but we can't bookmark spots for people in advance. It would make it far too difficult to accurately determine how many spots are still available, and would cause additional confusion if people then cancel their reserved spots on short notice. To make it fair for everyone, we only secure camp spots for people who have bought a ticket.

I'll be nearby during the dates of the camp. Can I drop in for just one day / one class / one open mat?
Unfortunately, this isn't possible. The logistics of trying to keep track of day tickets for these camps would be a nightmare. Not to mention that if we allow one person to drop by, we have to allow everyone to drop by, and then we'd risk not having enough mat space for the people who actually paid for the full camp. Also, we often have a long waiting list for camp tickets, and it wouldn't be fair to those people if we let someone skip the list and come for a day. Same deal for everyone!:-)

Can I bring my kids to sit around/on the mats during the camp?
In order to create a quiet and focused training environment for the camp classes, we ask you to not bring your kids to the training area during camp. It would not be much of an issue with one or two, but if we allow one, we have to allow all and then we could risk suddenly having way too many babies and children there. Thank you for your understanding of this.

What are the terms and conditions of the booking?

Is it safe?
Yes :)

How many gis should I bring?
It depends on how much you want to train and if you also train nogi. We recommend two gis, that's enough for most people. Some people switch their days between gi and no-gi, and can do with a single gi.

Will I be allowed to film during the camp?
Yes, but always check with the instructor beforehand.

I only train with/without the gi, will there be enough training for me?
Yes! We promise there'll be more classes than you can possibly handle.

Where do the participants come from?
Our camps are usually attended by happy people from all over the world.

What language will the classes be taught in?
All classes are in English.

How can I coordinate rideshares with other campers to/from camp?
In our camp app there is a rideshare feature where you can post if you look for a ride, passengers or just someone to share a taxi or train with.

Is it possible to buy private lessons at camp?
We don't allow selling of any kind of services or products at the camp, including private lessons, massages, therapy, treatment, merchandise etc. This applies to both instructors and participants. So the answer is yes, but it has to be free :)

Is this just a BJJ camp?
Yes.

Will I receive a ticket in the mail?
There are no physical tickets for the camps. Your name is on our list when you arrive and check in.

When will there be training?
Training is running all day, every day!

I'm a complete beginner, can I still join?
Yes!! We have many hundreds beginners participate in our camps, every year.

I have booked a spot but have to cancel. Can I get a refund?
All bookings are non-refundable. You are most welcome to sell your spot to someone else, just let us know about it. In case the camp is sold out, we might have a waiting list you can obtain by emailing us. Click here for more information

Is it possible to test for belt promotion?
The Council of Traveling Black Belts can offer a brutally honest evaluations of skill level at our camps – no belt promotion guaranteed, naturally.
