WELCOME

A familiar setting, but at a new time of year and with an entirely fresh set of possibilities! For this summer camp, we’re heading back to Wagrain for five days of training among the rolling hillsides that are now brilliantly green and ready for you to explore. We’ll probably still manage to fit in the odd après-ski party though…

LOCATION

For the past few years we’ve been making regular pilgrimages to the ski slopes of Wagrain for our annual Winter Camp. This time around we’ll be heading there at the height of summer, when this quaint mountain village of 3000 people and the surrounding alpine landscape open up into a vast wonderland of bike trails, hiking paths, and sparkling lakes.

Wagrain is easily reachable from Salzburg airport, and features an incredible range of summer activities in addition to the five days of BJJ lessons, open mats, and workshops we’ve got lined up in our own private hotel.

ACCOMMODATION & FOOD

The camp venue is Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, a hotel located about a 10-min walk from the centre of Wagrain. We have the entire building to ourselves, so there’ll be plenty of space for all of us. You can choose between staying in a 6 bed shared room or in one of our few double rooms in case you’d like some more privacy after all the rolling and biking/hiking/swimming.

This is a very family-friendly location, and children of all ages are welcome. Families of between 3-6 people will be given private rooms with their own bathroom and shower, and there’ll be one kids’ class (8-15 years) and one open mat play-time (all ages) on the schedule each day.

Food is served three times a day and is included in the price of the camp. There’s also a 24-hour free fruit and (non-alcoholic) beverages bar that you’re welcome to use as much as you like, day or night. And if you need anything else in between meals, there’s a small supermarket just a one-minute walk from the house.

For couples and participants not bringing their families, we have kids-free floors and private double rooms available.

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU TRAINING

The hotel has a small sports area where we’ll be laying down mats and running classes (both gi and no-gi) every day. These are all taught by a variety of highly experienced instructors who bring their own perspective on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, sometimes incorporating concepts from other grappling arts such as wrestling, Judo and Luta Livre. We’ll also schedule daily open mat sessions at which you can roll, drill technique or just chat with the instructors and pick their brains.

All of our camps are renowned for their open and welcoming atmosphere. They’re full of enthusiastic, friendly people from all around the world, who enjoy training in a fun, relaxed, and open-minded environment. So regardless of whether you’re there with a group or travelling solo, you’ll always find someone to slap hands with.

The mats are available 24 hours a day, so you can always grab a friend and roll at any time. Even while there are classes going on, we have an extra mat space for drilling, rolling, going over techniques etc.

And for kids, there’ll be one BJJ class (8-15 years) and one open mat free-play hour (all ages) every day in the schedule. To keep our adult classes focused and quiet, kids will not be allowed in the training hall outside of the kids’ hours.

ONLINE VIDEO LIBRARY OF CAMP CLASSES

We’ll be professionally filming many of the classes and then hosting them online at our video library: BJJ Globetrotters in Action. They’ll be entirely free to access (as will the videos from all our other camps), so if you want to refresh your memory you can go back and check out the technique as many times as you want.

OTHER ACTIVITES

Wagrain is right on the doorstep of the largest national park in Austria, the 1856 km2 Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, and is an ideal starting point for you to jump onto dozens of potential hiking trails of varying length and difficulty. The spectacular mountain scenery stretches far off into the distance in every direction; just pick one and you’ll find yourself weaving through a fairytale landscape of lakes, meadows, and wooden huts. The largest lake, the Jägersee, is only 15 minutes away by car, and there you can either relax with a beer on the shore or hire a rowboat and spend a few hours drifting leisurely under a clear alpine sky.

The vast array of slopes around Wagrain make it paradise for mountain biking. Bike Welt Wagrain has 9km of trails featuring jumps, tables, and banked turns, and is easily reachable with the Flying Mozart lift (10-minute walk from the hotel). If you’re in the mood for something a bit easier on the bones, there’s a dense network of cycle trails in the countryside around the village, and plenty of places where you can rent bikes and e-bikes.

As well as all that, you’ve got climbing, ziplines, soccer golf, paragliding (Wagrain is one of the finest destinations for it in Austria), and fishing right on your doorstep. If you ever want to keep things nice and relaxed after a particularly strenuous open mat, just grab a rod and enjoy the picturesque scenery and the soothing silence.

FREE ADMISSION TO NEXT DOOR WATER PARK

Included in the camp price, is free, daily admission to the swimming pool part of the next door Wasserwelt Amadé, only two minutes walk from our hotel.

Apart from the indoor- and outdoor swimming pool, this place is also a large wellness center with many different saunas, steam baths, guided infusion sessions and fresh-air terraces. Admission to the sauna area is around €5.

This is the perfect place to relax after a long day of hiking or Jiu Jitsu!

WORKSHOPS

Off the mats, we’ll be holding a series of workshops taught by a selection of instructors and highly knowledgeable camp attendees. These will all take place in the camp venue. Generally they focus on Jiu Jitsu and sport-related topics, but we’ve also had presentations on things like improving your photography, getting ideas and making stuff happen, and analysis of famous fights – basically anything cool that we think might be interesting!

BRING YOUR FAMILY

This is the first family-friendly camp we’ve ever held. We’ll ensure that family groups of between 3-6 people get their own private room (with bathroom and shower) in the hotel, and we’re specifically tailoring the camp schedule so that kids can participate in their own dedicated BJJ class (8-15 years) and hour of open mat play-time (all ages) each day.

Here are a few more examples of the vast range of family activities nearby:

  • Playground, football field, trampolines and table tennis table directly at the hotel
  • Unlimited, free access to the water park right next door, featuring slides, pools and a large outdoor playground
  • Huge outdoor play area for kids (Geisterberg), accessible by lift from Alpendorf (20-min drive away)
  • Alpine roller coaster Lucky Flitzer in Flachau (15-min drive away)
  • Great selection of hikes and playgrounds reachable by Grafenberg lift (only a few minutes away)

Please note that our minimum age required to participate in the camp without an adult is still 18 years of age, as usual.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

BJJ Globetrotters’ own professional photographer, Stevie Antoniou, will be running a workshop during the camp on how to take better photos. Bring your own camera for a theory lesson, followed by hands-on practice with Stevie’s guidance in the stunning Alps. Here’s your chance to take your photography skills to the next belt level!

MORNING YOGA

Five days of Jiu Jitsu and hiking in the alps is tough on the body! In order to keep us as limbre and loose right until the end, we’re bringing back our instructor to run morning yoga sessions every day of the camp.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Where is the camp?
The camp will be held at Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Kirchboden 19, 5602 Wagrain, Austria.

    How do I get there?
The closest international airport is Salzburg (SZG), less than 70km away. From there you can get a train to the nearby village of St. Johann im Pongau, and then a bus or taxi on to Wagrain. You can also take a taxi directly from Salzburg airport, which takes around 45 minutes and cost approximately €25 per person when shared as a group (get in touch with other camp participants through our Facebook group).

There is also a train from Munich to St. Johann, which is very easy to use and only takes a few hours.

Or just grab a lift with one of the many Globetrotters that drive to the camp from all over Europe.

I’ll be nearby during the dates of the camp. Can I drop in for just one day / one class / one open mat?
Unfortunately, this isn’t possible. The logistics of trying to keep track of day tickets for these camps would be a nightmare. Not to mention that if we allow one person to drop by, we have to allow everyone to drop by, and then we’d risk not having enough mat space for the people who actually paid for the full camp. Also, we often have a long waiting list for camp tickets, and it wouldn’t be fair to those people if we let someone skip the list and come for a day. Same deal for everyone! :-)

Do you have female-only rooms or do you mix them?
It depends on who signs up for the camp. If there are enough women to fill out a room, of course that will be our first priority. If not, we’ll have mixed rooms.

Is there a minimum age for participation?
Kids can participate together with at least one adult. Our minimum age required to participate in the camp without an adult is 18 years.

What are the terms and conditions of the booking?
    Here you go.
