[Tay’sTravels&Trains(10)] Curich Dojo

šŸ•°ļø [Past Story]
On my journey from Canada to Brazil for BJJ,
I finally reached Cusco.
Thanks to information I got from gyms in Lima,
I already knew there was a BJJ gym in Cusco.

šŸ„‹ [Gym Info]
• Date: April 2025
• Name: Curich Dojo
• Location: Final de la calle de CevicherĆa Vichayito, Av. Collasuyo 08000, Cusco, Peru
• BJJ Globetrotters Affiliation: No

Facilities:
• One of the highest-located BJJ gyms in the world
• About 4 km from the city center
• A large, full building dedicated to training, located on a hill

How to get there:

  1. Take a bus, or
  2. Run about 30 minutes (I ran)

🧾 [About]
After a great BJJ trip through Peru,
I heard that this is considered the best BJJ gym in Cusco.
(I also heard there are several gyms, but I couldn’t find them.)

I was already tired from hiking Machu Picchu,
but I didn’t want to miss the chance to train at one of the highest BJJ gyms in the world.
I ran all the way there, passing local views like traditional markets—
but you should wear a mask because of the dust!

🤯 [Impressions]
They have a whole building just for the BJJ gym, and it’s clean and well-kept.
There were a lot of people training even though it was lunchtime.
I met another traveler from Australia,
and Eric, who lives two hours away in a reserve but still comes to train.
Coach Nico is from Lima, where I also had an amazing BJJ experience.

šŸ’” [What I Learned]
• A good wrestling warm-up
• How to ignore my partner’s underhook when entering the legs by using my head position and dropping my knee
• How to escape the back position
• How to counter my partner’s toe hold with proper elbow direction from the back
• Don’t play half guard with a big guy when you’re tired—
you will get flattened!

šŸ¤” [Thoughts]
I think BJJ is not only great exercise,
but also an amazing way to meet unique people.
There are so many people training in their own style—
like the Australian traveler and Eric who lives deep in the forest.

To get better at Jiu-Jitsu,
I also need to build my own way and create my own journey.
